Our
club started in September this year with a visit from
Need
to Read Book Club founder, Emily Conrad.
The October
Meeting, was
a club highlight!
We
read Wringer,
by Jerry Spinelli and
welcomed
guest speaker, Frank McDonough,
who
races pigeons. His willingness to share his pigeons
helped us appreciate and apply the dilemma of the
main character in the book.

At
the end of his visit, Mr. McDonough "let his
pigeons go."
He
said the pigeons would beat him home. AMAZING!

In
November we read and discussed our choice of
Historical
Fiction books.
In
December we read the Classic, A
Christmas Carol.
In
January we started our "Reading for Others"
Service Project with a visit from Tammy Nolen, Volunteer
Coordinator
at
the Spartanburg Children's Shelter.
She
explained her program and book needs of the children.
In
February we read and discussed our choice of Biographies.
In
March we read and discussed Mystery
books.
In
April we read and discussed our choice of animal
books
and
finished our Service Project reading.
In
May we wrapped up our "Reading for Others"
Service Project with a book-buying event at Barnes &
Noble and a book distribution event at the Spartanburg
Children's Shelter.

We
are proud to announce
that
we read 20,217 pages
and
earned $907.67 to buy
193
new books for children at the
Spartanburg
Children's Shelter!
The
following are some of our thoughts
about
"Reading for Others"
and
our visit to the Children's Shelter:
"It
was amazing to pick books for the kids and then see
the
smiles
on their faces when they picked books for themselves.
It
made me so happy to give to them." -Taylor
"I
love to read, but this time I wasn't reading for me.
This
whole service project was for them." -Allison
"It
made me really happy and really sad at the same time.
I
was sad because the situation of the kids,
but
happy that I could make a difference." -Ashley
"The
kids were so grateful to have new books.
When
they came into the room, they went straight to the books.
I
could tell they were lonely, but we read and played
together.
They didn't hold anything back and at least for a little
while,
all
the kids seemed happy and knew they mattered."
-Tristen
