T he NEED TO READ BOOK CLUB started at the Spartanburg Day School in the fall of 2004 with 12 members and finished its 2nd year with 20 members from 7th and 8th grades.

Book Discussion:   Historical fiction or nonfiction
Guest speaker :  Historical re-enactor & author of Colonial Spy, Mickey Beckham

December 2005:
Book Discussion:  Classics
Holiday luncheon at local restaurant
Craft:  Bookmark Gift Exchange.

February 2006:
Book Discussion:   Book by favorite author
Guest speaker:  Betsy Teter: Founder & Publisher of Hub City Writers Project

April 2006:
Book Discussion: Books with animals as main characters
Guest speaker : Doreen Hoffman & animals from Hollywild Zoo

SERVICE PROJECTS:


Spring 2005:

12 members read over 24,000 pages and raised over $2,400.00 in 2 months. New books were purchased at Barnes & Noble Booksellers and distributed to children at the SPARTANBURG SOUP KITCHEN.

Spring 2006:
17 members read over 25,000 pages and raised over $2,000.00. Mayor Bill Barnet and Clifford the Big Red Dog joined the club to help distribute books to the children at the SPARTANBURG SOUP KITCHEN. Follow this link for pictures and  TV news coverage !
