2007 SPRING
& SUMMER NEWS:
The
Founding Chapter of the Need to Read Book Club
held
the "Giving Tree" fundraiser this summer
at Chick-fil-A Hillcrest to buy new books for
children at the Boys & Girls Club summer camp at
Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. Six young, talented BGC "rising
actors" joined them to kick-off the fundraiser
and tell the story of the Giving Tree as it has
never been told before! The Club raised $481.60 and
gave out over 100 books!
Inspiring
Success! Through
our Spring "READING FOR OTHERS" Service Project,
26 club members read 30,717 pages, earned $2,383.31,
and bought 516 new books for children in need.
Besides
reading to earn the money, the club members picked out
the books themselves and personally distributed them
into the hands of the children at the Spartanburg Soup
Kitchen and the Spartanburg Children Shelter. The children
received two books each and the rest were left for the
programs to distribute as needed throughout the summer.TALK
ABOUT ENCOURAGING SUMMER READING!
This
project proves that reading makes a difference!
"Reading
for Others" Service Project
The "Reading for
Others" Service Project is a reading incentive project that motivates Need to Read
Book Club members to read as much as possible over a 2 month period. Through a sponsored reading program,
members earn money to buy and distribute new books to children
in need. The more the kids read, the more money they
earn, and the more books they distribute to others.
If
you... would like to encourage reading among
our club members, you can make a donation
to the NEED TO READ BOOK
CLUB. Your money will not only encourage
our program, but will encourage children
in need to read by getting them brand
new books of their very own. You can also volunteer
your time & talents through our KEY
Support Teams Program - www.keysupportteams.org.
